about

“The Slip” by The Burroughs is a deep funk groove inspired by The Godfather of Soul himself, James Brown. The band’s four-piece horn section is showcased throughout the tune in tight hits and punchy lines. The lyrics tell a tongue-in-cheek story of dodging the pressures of modern life, where everyone sometimes wishes they could “slip” out of their obligations. Johnny “RedBird” Burroughs embraces his frontman energy as a natural storyteller as his narrative is enhanced by the group’s full-bodied horn section.

Check it
So the other day I was walking down the street when one of my ex “loves” came up to me
And she was like “Johnny where have been? I haven’t seen you in weeks”
And I was like “Baby we broke up two years ago and I haven’t seen you since then”
And she was like “Ah nah we didn’t break up”
And I was like, “Damn”

And gave her the slip
I gave her the slip
Got to make my getaway
I gave her the slip

The trouble didn’t end there ‘cause when I got home my land lady was waitin’ for me
And she was like “Johnny Your rent is two week past due!”
And I was like, “Oh you know what, my money’s in my jacket and it’s inside the apartment”
And when she turned around to open the door, you know what I did?

I gave her the slip
I gave her the slip
Got to make my getaway
I gave her the slip

Show ‘em how you slip now

So there I was running down the street when my phone started to blow up
Talk about: text this person, be a part of this group, engage in this, call this person, download this
And I was like, “Shoot.” All the sudden that phone fell out of my hand

I gave it the slip
I gave it the slip
I gave it the slip
Got to make my getaway
I gave it the

Got to give it the slip
Got to give it the slip

I give it the slip
Got to make my getaway
Got to give it the slip
